The usage and capabilities of generative AI are important to examine, however, it seems that based on the survey discussed above the societal misgivings are only enhanced by the willingness of a substantial percent of young professional employees in these uncertain times, the need, and the deep beliefs of our society and the potential risk that represents - individuality, moral choices, and bias - can AI be an ethical agent or merely an efficient assistant? The answer to this question may reveal more about us than our algorithms.

This creates a "black box" effect, which can diminish trust and complicate the identification of mistakes or biases. It isn't surprising that 43% of businesses are worried about how much they depend on technology and the threats associated with an indiscernible decision process.


To combat this state, organizational leaders and governments are rushing to facilitate guidelines, requiring explanations, fairness, and accountability from AI systems. In 2024, the U.S. alone spent more than $109 billion on private AI initiatives; additionally, a predominant worldwide effort is being realized to regulate and audit the ethical impacts of AI.

The developer? The company? The algorithm? This is not a hypothetical scenario—there are predictions that in 2025 alone, AI will displace 14 million jobs worldwide and that 41 percent of employers say they will reduce their workforce in the next five years due to automation. When machines make decisions with tangible consequences, who holds accountability?


It becomes even more complex when AI takes on higher order managerial/administrative functions, shifting from simple routine tasks to having decision-making influence over hiring, health care, and even the justice system.


The United States is expected to have 2.1 million job displacements due to AI this year. Moreover, 60 percent of jobs lost to AI will belong to knowledge work (roles requiring more nuanced human judgement). In Europe, 68 percent of employees say they are worried about losing their jobs due to the rise of AI.


So, as AI “goes rogue” or simply makes a mistake, what is the responsibility of the coder, the company, and society as a whole? All of us need to engage—not just as consumers but also as citizens—to ensure ethical AI is everyone’s responsibility.

There are nearly 100 million people employed in the AI industry today and 83% of companies view AI as the top business priority. AI is not changing just one segment of product and service market sectors globally, it is changing everything from health care to leisure, and Netflix today earns 1 billion dollars a year, from AI-generated recommendations alone. In every respect, algorithms are influencing and driving what we do, buy or even believe.


As AI rises, ethical implications of its capabilities rise too. The technology is estimated to displace 85 million jobs by 2025, compared to creating 97 million new jobs—a new net of 12 million jobs being created, but with some disruption and concern for millions of workers.


Soon, half of all jobs will involve some element of AI assistance, but this is fundamentally changing how and where we work and how we interact with technology. In addition, AI's involvement in sensitive areas such as medicine, transportation, and law enforcement implies that its actions and consequences of its decisions may have life-altering, if not life-threatening outcomes in the above areas.


While these developments are noteworthy, society, regulation, and trust have not yet caught up. The Stanford AI Index 2025 reports explosive growth in applications and investment, but also that regulation, and mechanisms for equity are yet to be evident. Thus, society continues to confront challenges related to fairness, transparency, and accountability.

So what’s next? First, a commitment to developing and implementing ethical frameworks, standards, and protocols that consider transparency and human ideas and values. Secondly, a commitment to challenge and shape the technologies that will shape our world. And thirdly, a sense of humor, because if my smart fridge starts to judge my midnight snack, I’ll need it!


At this moment in time, our challenge is not just to innovate, but to innovate with conscience. The decisions we make with respect to how we design, deploy, and govern AI (and the cultural practices that govern it) will matter enormously when we ask ourselves whether AI has helped empower or divide. Let’s hope that our future robot overlords have not just intelligence, but also a moral compass (and perhaps a sense of good humor).
