Let’s start.

Which skills of an IT Project Manager to mention on the resume?

We divide the skills into 2 major sections: Technical Skills and Interpersonal Skills

As for Technical skills, one would generally be expected to have an excellent understanding of project management methodologies, tools and technology. Some of them are: Agile, Waterfall, JIRA, Basecamp, Trello, Zoho Projects, MS Project, etc.

The interpersonal skills are equally important, if not more.

Here’s a list of 7 core skills an IT Project Manager should not only hold but also demonstrate on the resume and in real life.

  1. Time Management

  2. Cost Management

  3. Risk Management

  4. Contact Management

  5. Leadership

  6. Solution-oriented

  7. Written and Verbal Communication

What are some examples of achievements for an IT Project Manager Resume?

Here’s something to ponder on.

If I can’t highlight my achievements on my resume, why shouldn’t I go across as ‘Lazy’, considering – my resume is easily one of the most important documents I’ll ever create?

Or, I don’t have any professional achievements to my credit.

Now that we’ve managed to drive the point home, here are some excellent examples of achievements you can mention on your resume:

  1. Some of the business problems you solved for the company resulting in a measurable benefit to the company (monetary or non-monetary)

  2. Time you saved on a project (Time is money, remember?)

  3. Productivity you increased (That of somebody else or of your own)

  4. The number of promotions you got in your previous job/s

  5. Awards you have won in your professional or educational journey

  6. Inventions, patents, innovations, contribution you’ve made to the existing body of knowledge or to the society

  7. Your professional connections (LinkedIn or otherwise, If you have good connections it helps your chances of being hired)

What would be a good example of an IT project manager resume summary?

Recruiters generally spend about 6 seconds on a resume before they either discard it after the first glance or go about reading it further.

Your resume summary plays a vital role here as it sends out a clear message to the recruiter. And the message is something like “I’m not only relevant to this job, but also a strong candidate”.

Now, before we take an example of a good resume summary, it’s important to know what’s not a good resume summary. Here’s one:

“I’m a dynamic project manager want to utilize experience in project management in a challenging environment in order to grow my knowledge and skills”.

Here’s what’s wrong with this one:

  1. It only talks about what the candidate wants to achieve and fails to mention what the prospective employer stands to gain

  2. Some of the words like ‘challenging’ and ‘dynamic’ are so ‘beaten to death’ that the only thing it does to the recruiters is putting them off

  3. Grammar, spelling mistakes, typos, word omissions, punctuation errors are clear signs to recruiters to discard the resume

Now, let us take an example of a good summary for an IT Project Manager’s resume:

“Highly motivated IT Project Manager with 7+ years of experience in managing big projects with prestigious companies including TCS and Cognizant. Currently managing a 20+ member team, for a US-based client, with a monthly billing of $1,00,000.”

What it conveys to the recruiter:

  1. The person can manage teams as he has been doing in the past

  2. He / She can handle international clients

  3. Can manage large projects

  4. Brings to the table what you’d expect from someone who has worked with large companies like TCS, Cognizant and the like.

What’s the difference between IT Project Manager resume and IT Project Manager CV?

A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is, relatively, a more detailed document when compared with a resume. While the resume is a more concise document essentially capturing your career, education and some basic info, the CV, which can run into two or more pages, would generally list more detail about you, like your accomplishments, awards, achievements, publications and even a much greater detail about the responsibilities handled in your previous roles.

The usage of the terms CV and Resume, however, varies from one country to another. While these terms are used interchangeably in India, Australia and South Africa, the term ‘CV’ is preferred in the UK and New Zealand. In the US and Canada, resume is the first choice.
